So you have finally gotten your varsity Chenille letter and have affixed it onto your coveted letter varsity jacket. You have been wearing it around for a couple months and began to notice a couple signs that your jacket is experiencing some wear and tear. This is the perfect time to learn how to care for your jacket so that it will last you for many years to come instead of beginning to fall apart at its very seams. Within this article we will discuss how to maintain the leather arms of your varsity jackets and the wool center of it.

The first topic up for discussion is how to take care of your leather jackets arms. Although leather can be a very strong and resilient material it can begin to crack and tear in as little as a years’ worth of use. Why does this happen? Well it can be the result of one of two things. The first thing that could have happened is that a manufacturing problem occurred in which the manufacturer did not stretch the leather properly before putting the coating of dye on top of it, which will preserve the leather. The second, more common, problem is that Body oil and dirt can cause leather to crack over time. Leather is surprisingly enough a porous material which means that it will soak up oil whenever it touches it. If it is not cared for properly the oil, in a combination with dirt, will wear down the leather and lead to visible cracks on the surface after this happens there is no possible way to repair it however you can care for the leather in order to make it last.

Surprising enough, the remedy to this potentially costly problem all you have to do is rub some soapy water on it and wash it off once every month or two. The second point of care is that of the wool exterior of your jacket. Overtime and misuse, the fibers within the wool jacket portion can degrade which could cause small rips over a long period of time. It is however very easy to care for. All you need to do is carefully remove the fuzz balls that seem to magically form with a pair of scissors and make sure that you air out your jacket in a low moisture environment at least once or twice a week, if you are wearing it on a daily or bi-daily basis.

So, it is important that you care for your clothing as it will fail you if you do not take care of it properly. All of these statements could be considered common sense in a way because you always need to take care of all of your clothes in the proper way or else it would only be a waste of money. Take care of your jacket and maybe one day you will be able to show your children it like the day it was considered new.
