Letterman Varsity Jackets have been around for a very long time. It could even be considered a rite of passage to receive your varsity chenille letters and attach it to that coveted jacket to show that you have done extraordinary things during your academic career. This is however not always the case. What can be some of the psychological ramifications from when you know that you are not going to make the team?

It is your senior year, and you have had your hopes up that will by chance make the varsity football team this year. You have been playing on the Junior Varsity team for the past two years and you perform your best to live up to the expectations that your coach has set out but it just wasn’t enough. You have been cut from the football team. This can be one of the most devastating blows to your self-esteem. You can begin to doubt yourself in even the most trivial tasks as it can cause you to begin questioning yourself of whether your hard painstaking work can live up to anyone’s expectations.

This brings us to the most important point of them all, don’t doubt your work! By doing so, you can begin going into a downward spiral that isn’t good for anyone around you. This could cause you to suffer in your scholastic studies, which are the most important, or alienate your friends. Rather, try to become more creative and focus your attention elsewhere in which if that varsity letter is what you want the most; you can always gather strength and learn a new athletic sport that you could excel in during the off season, you could participate in non-athletic activities such as the marching band or theatre, you could even throw yourself into your school work and earn an academic letter.

All in All, it just isn’t worth getting all torn up over being cut from the team. There are plenty of activities within your senior year that could allow you to complete your rite of passage. Not to mention, there are still college in which you could earn a letter or two there as well. School work should always come before Athletic, non-curricular activities to begin with because not everyone is cut out to be that Athletic super-star. If you are truly interested in Athletics one should always consider trying different means to meet that particular personal goal in which being an Athlete is not the only option. You could become a coach, a judge, or a personal trainer yourself to help other Athletes to possibly meet their own goals later in their life.
