So, you’re designer varsity jackets has become stinky and stained over the course of wearing it over a period of time? Well your first instinct may be to throw it into the washing machine. Don’t! This is a grave mistake that many people make and will result in the wool of your jacket to fade and could possibly damage the leather of your precious garment. Another instinct you may have is to take it to a professional dry-cleaner. Don’t! This too may cause irreparable damage as many cleaners use sprays that can ruin your cloth, which you have spent so much time to earn the varsity Chenille Letter that is proudly displayed on it.

When cleaning, you should hand wash it thoroughly and gently. The items that you will need to clean your Jacket carefully are a Bowl, some clean water (Preferably distilled), a clean cloth (Preferably a Chamois leather cloth), some shampoo, a lint brush, a box filled with baking soda and some liquid hand washing laundry detergent. First you should fill the bowl with hot water and add in approximately 3 tablespoons of the shampoo in which you should mix it all together thoroughly. Next, you should use your cloth, which has been dipped in the cleaning solution you have created, to wipe only the leather arms of the wool jacket. Be careful Not to accidentally clean the wool with this solution.

After you have cleaned the leather arms , you should proceed to brush the wool portion of the jacket with the lint brush to remove any of the Fuzz that has been created through repeated use. Next, you should use the liquid laundry detergent to spot wash areas of the Jacket that have been stained during use until they have disappeared. After this spot washing has been completed, you should store the jacket overnight in a sealed box of baking soda to absorb the odors that the jacket has been giving off. Next, you should submerge the jacket (without any cleaning solution whatsoever) in a vat of warm water for approximately five to ten minutes. After this has been completed, you should drain the water and allow it to drain in a bathtub or sink and place the jacket onto a towel to absorb excess water. Finally, hang the jacket up to dry on a clothes hanger overnight indoors. Do Not put it in the dryer to speed up the process as this could lead to shrinking.

Now, hopefully you will think twice before throwing that stinky attire into the dryer or taking it to a professional cleaning service. It is much simpler, more rewarding and safer to care for the Jacket that you have earned yourself in any case anyway. By following this simple method you will ensure that your outfit is as new as the day you bought it.
