The varsity letters on varsity letter jacket patches are monograms that represent an achievement the person wearing the garment earned during their school years. These patches are earned by the student and the jackets they are attached to are purchased for the sole purpose of displaying the monogram.

These patches are earned by the participants in sporting events that the school they attend hosts. They are also earned by the individuals who belong to the marching band at the school. The band represents the school at the sporting events and at competitions with other bands from other schools in there are. There are some other scholastic organizations on campuses that also award these patches to the people involved with their efforts.

Before 1911 there are no pictures or articles that represent members of high schools wearing letter sweaters. There are however, pictures and articles depicting college students wearing sweaters with monogrammed patches on them. These sweaters were worn by members of the sporting teams as a part of their uniform. If they participated in a sport they wore a sweater in the school colors with a patch that represented the sport they were involved with.

It should be noted that not all of the players were awarded the symbol to wear on their clothing. This was an honor bestowed to the captain of the team and later on the honor was bestowed to other members of the team if they did an extraordinary job of competing. Later still, the high school players that got the jacket were basically given an honor symbol just because they played on a team. There are however, special symbols that are presented to the captain of the team, and to the most valuable player, and other players that in some way stand out from the rest.

In 1911 the first portrait of a high school student wearing a letter sweater appears. The wool bodied jackets with the leather sleeves were made popular in the 1930s and the trend of using these garments to showcase the award patches has continued since that time with very few changes.

There is generally an awarding ceremony held where the kids and their parents come to see them be presented with the symbol. These sew on medals will either be felt or chenille. The material they are crafted from will be totally dependent on the school district and what they purchase. Felt is not as durable as the other material, but felt is quite a bit cheaper, so many schools choose these types in order to keep the cost under budget.

Parents will be responsible for purchasing the garment that these awards are attached to. The parents will also be responsible for having the medals sewn onto the garment. Most of the places that sell and manufacture these garments will also have a department that installs these accessories. You will also find that in almost every town there is someone that is a gifted tailor or seamstress, and they will happily attach these items for a small price.
